About the event
This Class is ages 13 and up This hands-on workshop teaches youth how to create polished, engaging videos for any social platform using just a smartphone. Students learn the essentials of shot composition, lighting, clean audio, steady movement, and simple editing techniques that make short-form content look intentional and professional. Through guided practice, each participant plans and films their own clips, experimenting with creative storytelling and visual style while gaining confidence behind the camera. All equipment is provided, and no prior experience is required. Students leave with practical skills they can use right away and original videos ready to share. Meet the Instructor: Tonya Sheffield is a filmmaker, educator, and community advocate dedicated to empowering youth and adults through digital media. As Founder and Executive Director of The Dream School Afterschool and Summer Program, she equips participants with digital literacy skills for career readiness and creative expression.
Sheffield holds a BFA in Filmmaking from UNC School of the Arts and a BS in History from Winston-Salem State University, blending creativity with historical insight. Her documentary work, including Young Americans and Pride and Dignity On The Hill, preserves and amplifies stories from marginalized communities, reflecting her passion for storytelling that inspires, educates, and empowers.
